FDA cracks down on milk labels

(WKOW) — Wisconsin’s dairy industry is struggling.

An effort at the federal level could help milk set itself apart.

The head of the Food and Drug Administration plans to crack down on non-dairy milk producers trying to keep companies from calling almond milk or soy milk "milk."

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin is behind the push.

"I’m not saying that this is the problem in totality. What I’m saying is that there’s a perfect storm of challenges and it could be solved if the agency simply followed its own rules," Baldwin said.

The owner of a vegan store in Green Bay says the fight doesn’t make sense to her but she’d go along with the new regulations.

I don’t think it’s fair for the FDA to kind  of pick on a certain group of businesses or group or group of entities that are creating a product, just because they use a term," said Charlee WIlson.

The FDA says its directives could take about a year to put in place.
