Support Our Schools tour concludes in La Crosse

La Crosse, WI (WXOW)  – Wisconsin Democratic Party leaders and educators finished their state-wide Support Our Schools tour in La Crosse on Thursday.

The tour focuses on the importance they put on education across the state, making stops in districts that went into referendums to help fund schools.

Party members reference Governor Scott Walker’s cuts to education as a reason for the referendums, saying over one million Wisconsinites chose to raise their property taxes to support local schools.

“83% of the referendums were passed in April,” Vicki Burke, retired educator and La Crosse County Board Supervisor continues, “I think that’s really an indication that people want to support education, they want us to put more money into education and they want it to be more of a priority,” Burke adds.

Various other political leaders and educators spoke at the last stop of the tour, highlighting their perceived issues in the Wisconsin education system and paths forward.

In an interview last month Governor Walker branded himself the pro-education governor.

“I’m being aggressive on this,” Governor Walker elaborates, “We’re proclaiming proudly that I’m the pro-education governor and that I want to continue to be the pro-education governor,” Walker declares.

Following the claim, Walker referenced his ACT 10 legislation, the expansion of Wisconsin’s voucher school program and his goal of boosting high school graduation rates.
