Officers ask people to avoid drinking and driving

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) — A lot of people celebrate Oktoberfest by enjoying some drinks with friends.

The La Crosse Police Department is reminding people about the importance of not drinking and driving.

There are a number of safe ride options available in La Crosse. People can call a cab or take an Uber or a Lyft. MTU buses also offer the Safe Ride Program which gives free rides to anyone between downtown and the campus areas.

Driving drunk could cost drivers both in safety and in finances.

“Operating while intoxicated, with all of the requirements that go along with it, you’re looking at probably $10,000 or $15,000 worth of hassle is what it boils down to,” Sgt. Tom Walsh with the La Crosse Police Department said. “So, certainly when we are talking about a $30 or a $40 cab ride, it’s probably cheaper and a lot less headaches.”

There are also designated drivers located at both of the Oktoberfest grounds. Those drivers get free Pepsi products for being a part of the program.
