Latest in Barron County: Watch Sheriff Fitzgerald interview, why arrested robber was cleared and more

Barron County (WXOW) – Investigators are still combing through tips about the Closs case in Barron County, but the number of incoming tips has dropped off significantly.

It was 17 days ago Jayme Closs, 13, vanished and her parents James and Denise were found fatally shot in their home.

According to Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald, the number of officers working the case has been cut in about half.

In a one-on-one interview with our sister station News 18 in Eau Claire  Fitzgerald said that 120 officers are in on the investigation, versus more than 200 working the case just last week.

A Facebook post by the sheriff Wednesday said they’ve received more than 2,000 tips and closed over 1,875 of them to date.

The sheriff also talked to News 18 about Kyle Jaenke-Annis, 32, the man who is facing charges after allegedly breaking into the Closs home and stealing Jayme’s clothing.

Fitzgerald said he was charged Wednesday in Barron County Circuit Court with burglary and bail jumping.

Fitzgerald said Jaenke-Annis was cleared quickly in Jayme’s disappearance, but not before a lot of digging was done. The sheriff said they searched Jaenke-Annis’ residence and his parents’ residence the same day as the allegedly robbery. He was also extensively questioned.

Most of all, Fitzgerald said he, and the community, is still holding on to hope that Jayme is alive.

The Facebook post asked people to continue to call in tips to 1-855-744-3879 or jaymetips@co.barron.wi.us
