Being unselfish leads to being unbeaten

La Crosse, Wisc. (WXOW)- The UW-La Crosse Women’s basketball team is off to the best start to the season since 2005-06 with a 7-0 record. They credit their success to the unselfishness of this basketball team. Three of their players are averaging in double digits in scoring. In addition, three or more players have scored in double digits in six of seven of their games this year.

” The balancing that we have scoring-wise makes us a little more challenging to guard, but that unselfishness to make that extra pass, to set a good screen for each other, to play hard for each other, to have each other’s back is something that we definitely talk about all the time,” Head Coach Karen Middleton said.

” All of us are looking for the extra pass, looking for who is the most open,” Freshman Emma Gamoke said. ” We want to take that best shot and honestly nobody cares who scores. We just want at the end of the night to get a win.”

Gamoke is the leading scorer averaging 14.4 points per game this year. She feels right at home with her decision to be an Eagle.

” Best decision I have made,” Gamoke said. ” I could not picture myself anywhere else. This is the perfect fit for me. The perfect team. The perfect coaches. Honestly, exactly what I wanted to play for in college basketball.”

” All of our freshman coming in, we were hoping and had expectations that they could make an impact and they are,” Middleton said. ” Obviously Emma has had a really special start to her season, both ends of the floor. She works really hard defensively to make sure that she is in the spots that she needs to be, great position defense, but also being very unselfish, but also aggressive offensively and has really meshed with our upper classmen really well.”

Part of what makes this program so special is 3rd year Head Coach Karen Middleton who brings passion and belief to the court.

” She emphasizes that they all have their own role,” Junior Dani Craig said. ” If you are special in that role, you are special to the team, and she loves that about everyone. That’s why I think we all buy into her because she cares about every single one of us, and we know she does.”

” When you think of a basketball coach and a college athletic coach, you want Coach Middleton,” Gamoke said. “She cares about you. She wants the best for you. She is going to do whatever it takes to win.”

Not only to win, but to have fun doing it.
