Watch: Questions still remain in Closs kidnapping

BARRON, Wis. (WXOW) – More details revealed but still more questions remain regarding the kidnapping of Jayme Closs and the fatal shooting of her parents.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald gave an update to the media Friday afternoon.

He started by saying that Jayme was “doing as well as circumstances can be allowed”. He said he hadn’t been able to talk to her yet. “We’re going to let her settle in and reconnect with her loved ones.” She was reunited with family members Friday afternoon.

Fitzgerald said a shotgun was recovered that was consistent with what happened at the Closs home on October 15. He said a shotgun was used to shoot open the door at the home. They believe it was also used to shoot James and Denise Closs. Forensic testing on the weapon is underway by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.

He also gave detail that suspect Jake Patterson shaved his head to avoid leaving trace evidence behind at the Closs home.

The biggest unanswered question is how suspect Jake Thomas Patterson knew Jayme Closs. Fitzgerald said they still don’t know. “Nothing in this case shows the supsect knew anyone at the Closs home or at any time had contact with anyone in the Closs family. The suspect had specific intentions to kidnap Jayme and went to great lengths to prepare to take her.”

It doesn’t appear to be any kind of social media connection between Jayme and Patterson according to Fitzgerald.

The only connection uncovered so far is that Patterson worked at the same Jennie-O plant in Barron as James and Denise Closs. That was nearly three years ago and only for one day. Fitzgerald said it didn’t appear he had any contact with either Closs.

Patterson is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Barron County Circuit Court. He’s held on three charges – Two First Degree Intentional Homicide charges in the deaths of James and Denise Closs and one count of Kidnapping for taking Jayme.
