Artifact Show Puts History on Display

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) — The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center held its annual artifacts show at Valley View Mall on Friday.

For over 20 years, the organization has brought early Native American and historical artifacts to display for the community. It is also an opportunity for the Coulee Region artifact collector community to get together.

“The collectors like to come back and see what other people have been finding in the area,” Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center Education Coordinator Jean Dowiasch said. “It’s nice for the general public to get an idea of the history of our area.”

There was a “live dig” of sorts where archaeologists picked at rocks. Replicas from animals long gone were on hand and people were allowed to touch them. Tools that Native Americans used years a go were on display. Altogether, it is a unique way for people to get a physical feel for the history of the area.
