West Salem family takes “refresher” parenting classes

WEST SALEM, Wis. (WXOW) – We are lifelong learners, and as parents, sometimes in need of a refresher course.  One local mom is keeping up on her parenting skills.

Dawn Running loves to spend time with her 2 1/2 year old Annabelle.

“Annabelle is something else,” said Dawn. Some parents call it the terrible twos. “She’s half primate. She can scale anything in this house. I’ve never had a child like my daughter.”

Dawn has taken care of a lot of kids. She went to school for childcare and has done daycare for 10 years.

“So I have a lot of tools for other people’s kids, but when it comes to your own, people have been right all along as they told me it’s completely different when you have your own.”

So she’s seeking the advice of Chris Peterson, The Parenting Professor. “We just need to hone some of the skills that we have and learn some new tactics along the way to make parenting less stressful,” said Peterson.

Peterson’s parenting classes use love and logic to help parents change the way they talk to their kids. It’s a research-driven philosophy founded in 1977 providing practical tools and techniques that help parents create healthy relationships with their kids.

“We’re kind of led to believe that we always have to be anxious and exhausted and parenting the love and logic way gives us some skills so that we’re not that way,” explained Peterson.

The classes help Dawn remember to be patient, a tough lesson she’s learned before.

“I wanted to get back to the place where I’m super grateful because I didn’t think I’d ever get to be a mom.”

Dawn and her husband Justin tried to have kids for six years. She finally got pregnant but lost the baby. Things started to turn around when they adopted Annabelle and became foster parents, too.

Dawn took Peterson’s class back in January and is planning to take the upcoming course with her husband.
