GREEN BAY, Wis. (WXOW) – History repeats itself again.
The Aquinas Blugolds defeated the Melrose-Mindoro Mustangs 65-39 to win the WIAA Girls Division 5 State Basketball title.
Aquinas beat Melrose-Mindoro on the same floor a year ago to win the 2018 title.
While both teams played a close game in the first half-it was 23-20 Aquinas at the break-the Mustangs were ice cold to start the second half.
Aquinas broke open the game with a 15-0 run in the second. It was almost six minutes before Melrose-Mindoro finally got on the board on a free throw from Mesa Byom.
It was to prove too big a lead for the Mustangs to overcome.
The Blugolds took advantage of turnovers and grabbed rebounds to stifle Melrose-Mindoro on their end of the court. Aquinas then converted those opportunities into points, led by Lexi Donarski and Kayla Bahr.
Donarski had 22 points while Bahr added 17 to pace the Blugolds.
Melrose-Mindoro’s leading scorers were Erika Simmons with 12 and Mesa Byom with 9.
Aquinas is planning a welcome home rally for the team at 8:30 p.m. at the high school.
