Medical Monday: Don’t throw out your medications

(WXOW) – Community members join the front lines in the battle against both the opioid crisis and pollution with a simple action. Experts say drug take-back efforts go a long way toward reducing the risk of danger.

La Crosse County plans to hold a drive-through drop-off event on Saturday, April 27. Between 9 am and noon, anyone can bring their medications to the Health & Human Services building on 4th St. There’s no appointment necessary.

Alternatively, those who cannot make it to the county’s event can take their medication to a handful of dedicated sites. These sites on the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse are open year-round.

Gundersen’s environmental compliance director, Eric Bashaw, said safe disposal of medication helps in two main ways. For one, it takes away the potential for chemical contamination to things like groundwater or food supplies. That can happen, according to Bashaw, when medicine is tossed out or flushed down the toilet. He added that it also removes the risk of misuse by the patient or family members.
