Aquinas on pace for big finale on Saturday

La Crosse, Wisc. (WXOW)- Aquinas entered Friday’s State Track and Field Championships with the most event entries in boys and girls in Division 3. They were hoping their state championship experience during the year would bring them success this weekend.

“We’ve got people that are familiar with this type of environment, and this type of stress,” Head Coach Geoff Wilhelmy said. “We are taking the collective efforts of all the coaches from all three seasons, and it is all coming down to this season.”

“Experience from other sports is really nice to have when you come to state track because there’s just so many people sitting up there so it’s kind of nerve racking if you don’t have any past experiences to help you,” Aquinas Junior Lexi Donarski said.

Coach Wilhelmy knew the boys and girls 4 X 200 relays were vital to their success, and both the boys and girls finished with the top qualifying time.

“We knew that we really have to focus on our relays because those can pull us a lot of points, so if we are able to score a lot of points with our relays we have a chance at winning,” Donarski said.

“We knew we were seeded first but that doesn’t mean you can just slack off,” Aquinas Senior Bryant Meyer said. “So we had to still come out and run our race.”

In addition, the boys 4 X 100 meter relay also recorded the top qualifying time. The girls also qualified in the 4 X 100 relay and the 4 X 400 relay.

Outside of the relays, Lucas Beck finished with the top qualifying time in the 100 meter dash, Bryce Lee finished in fourth place in the boys shot put, and Ethan Gregg took home the silver medal in the 3200 meter run beating out the defending state champion David Vannucchi.

“Beating Vannucchi or going out with Vannucchi, that’s been my goal,” Gregg said.

Aquinas is in good shape for the finals tomorrow. They qualified five total relays. Three girls, and two boys. They also have five total individual qualifiers for tomorrow that includes Donarski and Beck in two events.
