UPDATE (WAOW) — One person is dead after a welfare check leads to a deputy shot in Wood Co.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, police were called to a welfare check on State Highway 186 in Arpin.

While there, the subject allegedly got a knife. A struggle ensued, and the person was shot by law enforcement, according to officials. They say the person died.

A Wood Co. deputy was shot during the incident and has non-life threatening injuries. However, it isn’t clear who shot the deputy. Another civilian was injured during the incident and is in stable condition. No details into how that person was hurt were made available.

DCI is leading the investigation.

WOOD COUNTY, Wis. (WAOW) – A Wood County deputy was shot Tuesday, according to police.

Officials say it happened while deputies were responding to a welfare check on a suicidal subject in the township of Arpin. The condition of the deputy is not known, however, he was airlifted to the hospital.

Wood County Sheriff, Shawn Becker, says it was an ‘all hands on deck’ situation.

“When you get a phone call that one of our own has been shot, it’s all hands on deck when you hear this type of situation,” said Becker.

The investigation has been passed on to the Division of Criminal Investigation.
