EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – There is an exception to keeping wildlife wild – turtles in the middle of the road.
DNR officials are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for turtles and to help them cross the road safely.
They say you should grab the turtle’s shell and walk it across to the other side of the road.
Officials said this is the season for pregnant female turtles to find their nesting grounds.
DNR officials say it is important to report where you made your rescue so they can prevent more turtle deaths.
While you lend a helping hand, law enforcement says don’t put your own life at risk.
“Make sure you park your car well out of traffic if you have to get out to move the turtle,” said Eau Claire Officer Josh Miller. “Then absolutely wait for any traffic to clear before you get out onto the road. If you happen to have a high-visibility vest or something in your vehicle, by all means put that on. Again, don’t put yourself at risk to save a turtle.”
Miller said if it’s too busy to step in and save the turtle you can call authorities to help.
