Local students use pop musical to take tough topics to court

Onalaska, WI (WXOW) – There’s no summer slide for students participating in Onalaska High School’s summer musical. Instead, the cast of “Legally Blonde” will “bend and snap” its way to extra credit, tackling some timely themes.

The musical based on the movie of the same name, tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority sister at UCLA who takes on Harvard Law School to pursue a recent ex-boyfriend. There, Woods deals with adversity as she battles her way to the head of the class. Senior Rachel Schoenecker said one of the issues centers around inappropriate relationships with people in power–a relevant theme in the midst of the “Me Too Movement.”

For Schoenecker who plays Woods in Onalaska’s production, the character provides a challenge. In what she calls the role she’s always wanted, Schoenecker says she must try to stay true to the character popularized by Reese Witherspoon while giving Woods her own spin.

You can see “Legally Blonde” the musical at Onalaska High School’s Claude C. Deck Performing Arts Center this Friday and Saturday, July 12-13. Showtimes are 7:30 pm nightly.
