LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A La Crosse Police Officer was wounded in a shooting during a domestic violence call Saturday afternoon.

Police were called to a duplex at 317-319 9th Street South around 3:15 p.m. according to Captain Jason Melby.

When they arrived they came under fire from the man involved in the domestic incident. One officer was wounded in the shooting. He was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

The name of the officer has not been released.

Police returned fire wounding the suspect. That person who hasn’t been identified, is being treated at a La Crosse hospital for his injuries.

A neighbor tells WXOW that he knew the family who were involved in the incident. He said he never saw anything that would have led him to believe something like this would ever happen. He said they appeared to be simply a normal family.

Captain Melby said the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation was coming in to do an independent investigation of the incident. They arrived at the scene around 5:45 p.m.

The area around the 300 block of 9th St South remains blocked off to both traffic and pedestrians as the investigation continues into Saturday night.

We will update this as more information becomes available.
