LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The Coulee Region Humane Society is hoping to clear their kennels during this year’s 15th annual Adopt-A-Thon.
Kennel Operations Manager Amber Grosch says that the Humane Society has never actually needed to clear out their kennels during their Adopt-A-Thon event, but this year they do.
With a recent grant, the Humane Society is going to upgrade their cat kennels by installing a portal in each one. The new portals would give the cats a larger living space, with more room to move freely. The portals cannot be installed unless the kennel is empty. Grosch says this year’s event is important in helping the Humane Society achieve that goal of helping their shelter cats have better living conditions.
“When you think about it, if they can’t even stretch like a normal cat should stretch, their food is right next to where they go potty. they’re sleeping right next to their litter box. It’s just, they’re going to get sick. They’re going to get stressed and they’re going to be here longer. So we really are doing this to better the lives of our cats who are staying at our shelter while they are here,” Grosch said.
The Adopt-A-Thon is a four day adoption opportunity. This year the Humane Society made it Monopoly themed. Adoption fees are waved for cats and kittens and there’s a discount on dog and small animal adoption fees. The Coulee Region Humane Society has already started the installation process. They will be installing a total of 29 portals in the cat kennels by the next few weeks.
