G-E-T embraces team first mentality as they head into a season of change

Galesville, Wisc. (WXOW)- G-E-T is ready to embrace change this year as they switch from the Coulee Conference to the South Central Conference. They will also change their starting quarterback.

Brandon Boos started nine games for the Red Hawks last season, passing for 241 yards and one touchdown. This year, Boos will move to full back and Sawyer Schmidt is slated to take over the starting QB role. The team agrees that the willingness to try out new positions will make this team successful.

“Moving Brandon to backfield has been a real nice plus for us,” Head Coach Jon Steffenhagen said. “He is a big kid. He is a 6’2, 200 pounds, and he has accepted the role well. That’s one thing that I like about the program. Kids sometimes they want to play full back, and they end up playing guard for three years, and that’s just the way it’s got to be if you want to be successful.”

“They are both my brothers, but Sawyer sees the field really well, and Brandon is fitting in at full back really well,” Running Back Bryce Burns said. “I think it is going to make the team a whole lot better. It makes the team greater when people realize that they need to switch positions for the teams greater good.”

As for the conference change, every team is new to G-E-T besides Black River Falls. However, the mentality is football is still football no matter what conference you play in.

“It’s kind of one of those things, whatever happens happens,” Steffenhagen said. “The cards the WIAA deals you, I guess that’s what you have to play. It’ll be interesting, you know. You’ve kind of been in the grind for 25 years of kind of playing the same old, same old and now you got one of the same old and everybody else is going to be fairly new.”

“We definitely have to watch more film this year than normal,” Burns said. “We gotta be on top of guys, and they can’t just expect to know things this year because we got whole different teams, whole different concepts, but I think we got it.”

G-E-T opens up the season with a familiar opponent as they play at West Salem Friday August 23rd.
