Hi-Crush halting production at Whitehall plant; Layoffs coming

WHITEHALL, Wis. (WXOW) – The owners of the Hi-Crush sand plant near Whitehall announce they are stopping work at their facility and commencing layoffs at the end of the month.

Approximately 35-40 employees, mostly hourly production workers, are affected. The workers were notified by letter last week.

In a letter to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development explaining the move, General Counsel Mark Skolos cited “unforeseeable business circumstances associated with decreased profitability in shipping sand from the Company’s CN plants and the Company’s responsibilities to its shareholders to operate effectively.”

Skolos said the company “has no choice but to halt production at its Whitehall plant.”

The letter said while they hoped the layoffs are temporary, Hi-Crush said it doesn’t expect any changes in conditions in the foreseeable future and said the layoffs will last at least through the end of the year.

The first round of layoffs begins on August 30 with approximately 15 employees. A second round of layoffs happens on September 6.
