Eau Claire (WQOW) – Just in time for school – August is Kids Eat Right Month.

Local health experts want to help get your kids excited about making healthy lunches and snacks.

The more involved kids are in planning and prep, the more excited they’ll be about food, according to Ruth Kilness, a health department nutritionist.

She suggested creating a weekly lunch menu at family dinnertime and even taking children shopping to expose them to how healthy meals are made early on.

“Variety in the lunch meal is really important and fun to keep kids excited about eating lunch,” Kilness said. “It doesn’t mean that it has to be different everyday, but maybe you just choose different types of bread. Maybe you use whole grain bread and then one day you use pita bread, maybe you use a bagel.”

Kilness said fruits and vegetables are important in any meal, but avoid prepackaged options that may have added sugars and salts.

She said the key to healthy snacks is to have them on-hand and easy for your kid to grab.
