Despite defensive gaps, La Crosse Central has a good shot at MVC title

La Crosse, Wisc. (WXOW)- Four years a go, La Crosse Central football finished 0-7 in conference play. Since then, they’ve made big strides as a program, finishing 5-2 and tied for second in the MVC last season.

Much of that success comes in part to twin brothers, Johnny and Jordan Davis. Johnny led the conference in passing for 2,741 yards and 22 touchdowns. While Jordan had 872 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Davis’ now enter their last year of football before they head to Wisconsin next year for basketball.

“They’ve got to lead the team, there is no doubt,” Head Coach Tony Servais said. “Them and Andrew Teff and like I said Max Popp, Peter Fleming. Those guys have got to lead their team. They are our most experienced guys. They’ve had a lot of experience with wins, playoff games, those types of things. They know exactly what it takes to win the conference title. They’ve got to bring it every day and show the young kids what it’s like to do the things the right way and be a great leader.”

“That just makes me want to go harder,” Jordan Davis said. “Every game is going to count for me and my senior year so I just want to give it my all.”

Defensively, the Red Raiders return four seniors up front, but the secondary lacks experience. However, Coach Servais is still trying to put all the right pieces together, and believes they have a good shot at the crown this year.

“We’ve got to come out and take each day and win the day is what I have been telling the kids,” Servais said. “Win the day, give your best effort every day. Can’t take steps backwards. You know great teams don’t take a step backwards, they just keep getting better and better and better.”

“Most of it is just making sure that we are not doing our own things,” Senior Linebacker Andrew Teff said. “We’re all working as a team, making sure we make our team plays, not just trying to go off on our own.”

“We just need to play as a family on both sides of the field, on offense and defense,”Jordan Davis said. “Come together and form one and fight everyone to the end.”

Central will host Eau Claire North on Thursday August 22nd at 7 pm for their season-opener.
