LA CROSSE, WI. (WXOW) As a part of the Major League Fishing REDCREST tournament, nearly 100 kids from the Boys and Girls Club in La Crosse had the opportunity to learn how to fish from the best in the business on Thursday.

Major League Fishing along with seven of their professional anglers hosted a “Youth Fishing Clinic” covering beginner and intermediate fishing techniques. Those techniques, including casting, how to bait a hook, and knot tying.

Professional angler Gary Klein says that teaching kids how to fish at a young age can change their lives. “To be in the outdoors, one of the cool things about the sport especially-I have always felt this- if you can teach a kid how to fish when they are that 5, 6, 7, 8 year range you got them for life. Because when that bobber goes under and they reel that fish in whether it’s that big or that big its a life-changing experience,” said Klein.

Each participating child received a free rod and reel, and additionally, 100 Shakespeare tackle box kits were donated to the Boys and Girls Club to help support their outdoor programming.
