La Crosse, Wisc. (WXOW)- It was a battle of ranked division three football teams on Saturday. #23 UW-La Crosse hosted #14 Illinois Wesleyan.

UW-La Crosse came away with back to back overtime victories after the Eagles defeated the Titans 33-27. In double OT, Linebacker Rusty Murphy came away with a fumble recovery 86 yard touchdown to win the game.

“Just numb,” Murphy said. “I am still numb from it. I will feel it later. I’ll be happy later, but right now it’s just.. I don’t know. I can’t even describe it. Can’t even describe it. Sky’s the limit for us. I mean until a team can stop our defense consistently, sky’s the limit.”

“That was wild, and I know God had a big part of that,” Defensive Back Joey Roth said. “There’s no words to describe it. I was just looking at him running, I was just ‘thank you, thank you.'”

“When our offense isn’t doing well, they’re just creating turnovers, they ended up with two scores and just the character those guys got and how they got our back is unreal, and it’s awesome to have a defense like that,” Wide Receiver Cole Spieker said.

“I just think that’s our team,” Head Coach Mike Schmidt said. “That’s what we’ve built here. That’s what we’ve done here. It’s just a bunch of guys that really believe in what we’re about, what we’re doing. Rusty exemplifies that the most. I think he is the best linebacker in the league. I think he keeps showing that. I think he was a great player last year and now he’s doing it again, so man that’s a lot of fun and that’s just a group of guys that really believe in each other.”

The UW-La Crosse defense had six interceptions. Joey Roth had three of those interceptions. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the year. They travel to Dickinson State Sept. 21st for their next game.
