(WXOW) – The World Health Organization estimates that sepsis affects 30 million people worldwide each year and causes about 6 million deaths. So, what is it and what are some of the signs?
In this edition of Medical Monday, Gundersen Health System critical care doctor, Justin Shurts, talked about how it can stem from a simple infection and quickly become fatal. He said it’s essentially a chain reaction through the entire body shutting down organs and systems.
Confusion, disorientation, fever and rapid heart rate are all signs of sepsis. Dr. Shurts said it’s important to seek medical attention as quickly as possibly if you believe an infection isn’t healing.
Shurts added, “Don’t be afraid to ask, could this be sepsis?”
