Popular downtown La Crosse business closing as others open

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Downtown La Crosse is booming with new business. Apartments, shops, and restaurants are all calling downtown home.

But one popular cupcake shop is closing its doors this week. Addiecakes in La Crosse will close its doors this Friday after opening three years ago. Christie Lindberg, Store Manager at Addiecakes said, “We’ve created so many friendships with so many of our regular customers and they’ve made sure to come in these last few days and wish us well.”

Lindberg added, “From the very start when we first announced our opening to even after announcing the closing the community has just been so great and supported us throughout this journey.”

Addiecakes’ owner is moving out of town for a new business venture, leaving the store open for someone else’s new opportunity.

As one downtown La Crosse business is closing its doors, another new business is getting ready to open theirs.

The Fat Porcupine Noodle Bar is getting ready to open at 4th and Main Streets. “In my mind, a fat porcupine is a porcupine that has friends,” said Brie Roland, Manager of the soon-to-be restaurant.

As for the name, Brie said there’s a parable about porcupines that emphasizes the need for togetherness despite the animals getting injured by each other’s quills.

Roland, her husband, and two of their friends are fulfilling their dream of opening a restaurant, planning to serve homemade ramen style noodles.

Brie worked previously in the restaurant scene in Minneapolis, “So we’d already been buying food from Viroqua and Vernon County for years and years and years. We’ve wanted to take a step back out of the cities, the hustle and bustle and grind and when we came to visit it was like this is a beautiful place we can see so much potential for us here.”

Robin Moses of Downtown Mainstreet Inc. said more businesses are coming than going, and this time of year is a popular time for inquires.

Addiecakes’ last day is this Friday.  They will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until sell-out. Fat Porcupine Noodle Bar could open sometime this fall.
