LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The La Crosse Area Veteran Mentor Program received a $1,858 grant from United Way on Friday.
The money will help LAVMP guide struggling veterans who might have ended up in the criminal justice system.
“There were individuals who had suffered trauma… it may be in their time of service that resulted in them getting involved in the criminal justice system,” LAVMP executive director Dustin Schultz said. “Ultimately, they saw that these people were getting arrested and wanted to do something about that.”
Schultz said the new funds will cover fees for a new iPad and “Carry Guides” that help the program work with incarcerated veterans or veterans who want help dealing with substance abuse.
