LA CROSSE, WI. (WXOW) Hamilton Elementary is celebrating the completion of its edible schoolyard.
On Thursday, members of both Hamilton and SOTA Elementary gathered to say thanks to those who made the garden possible. The garden aims to connect students to healthy food and nature.
“We find if we can peak their interest and curiosity now that it is something that they continue to learn about and be interested in into the future,” said executive director of GROW, Jamie O’Neill. “We also know that eating habits are typically solidified by second grade, so it’s very important to get in and be working with these younger students so that they can be incorporating this as they eat and grow and learn.”
The edible schoolyard will contain multiple sections, ranging from a pollinator garden to a rain garden, and even a food forest.
