Onalaska hoping strong start is a sign of things to come

Onalaska, Wis. (WXOW)  So it wasn’t the smoothest of performances by the Onalaska girls Tuesday night.
But some perspective, they are only six days into the season.

Still, there were signs that they are ready to contend again in the MVC this season.
They return all five of their starters from a team that went 10-2 in conference and 17-7 overall last year.
The Hilltoppers still beat West Salem by 14 even with not playing their best.
What they had was defense and that’s something they hope to hang their hat on all season.

“Our main focus is defense and building on what we had last year and taking it to the next step. So that’s going to be a big part of our run this year. We look to pressure, fast defense, keep them on one side. Since we’re smaller in size we have to find other ways to pressure the teams,” said senior Lexi Miller.
We worked a lot in the offseason. We had open gyms all the time. We were in the weight room. So I think hopefully this year it will all pay off,” said junior Olivia Gamoke.

Onalaska will host Eau Claire North on Friday.
