La Crosse, WI (WXOW) He arrived at Gundersen Health System in 1988.

Among Doctor Sigurd Gundersen, III first coversations, a discussion with the clinic president, his Uncle Adolf.

Dr. Sig, as he's known, asked, "So, what do you want me to do?" His uncle's answer, "take really good care of patients and we'll do the rest."

That began Dr. Sigurd Gundersen's career.

Since arriving, he's served as a general, pediatric and vascular surgeon. He also spent time as an administrator, during which the patient care and surgery facility known as the Legacy Building was constructed.

Now, he's considering that career as he looks ahead to retirement.

There's no five year plan. For now, something to which he's looked forward. More time with Jean Ann, his wife.

He enjoyed his time at the hospital and clinic in part, because of the family and education culture within the organization.

Dr. Sigurd Gundersen, III will retire January 31, 2020.
