LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Operation Homefront volunteers prepared over 3,000 letters and care packages for Wisconsin soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Kuwait on Friday.

The letters come from the community with general holiday greetings and the care packages include snacks.

Vietnam War veteran Major Tom Sharratt said sending letters has been his holiday tradition since 2001.

"It just brings the Christmas spirit to you at the right time of the year," Major Sharratt said. "Once a soldier always a soldier."

Operation Homefront Advisory Director Patti Lokken said these soldiers are still in a war zone and they need support from home.

"Our goal is to let them know how much we appreciate their service," Lokken said. "The fact that these people continue to serve and they continue to be there for our country... This is my way of doing my part to thank them for the fact that they keep doing that."

Lokken also said they will send the packages off in a few days.

If people want to volunteer or donate visit the Operation Homefront website.
