LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Consider it Shakespeare, shaken not stirred. The newly-formed group Shakespeare From the Ground will perform the playwright's classic comedy "12th Night" at Pearl Street Brewery on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Shakespeare performed in a bar might sound strange. But, the playwright actually intended for everyone to see his shows, according to the group's founder, Chuck Charbeneau.
"Shakespeare was reliant on the 'Groundlings,' the people who paid their penny to stand and watch the show," Charbeneau said.
He said he got the idea after seeing a similar performance from the Back Room Shakespeare Project in Chicago. With little more than an idea and a dedicated and talented group of local performers, he's bringing the free show to La Crosse.
Officially dubbed "12th Night for 12th Night" as it plays (almost) on the 12th night of the Christmas season, the one night performance takes place Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 pm. Doors open at 6 pm at Pearl Street Brewery on St. Andrew St.
