LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - La Crosse Police said the suspect wanted in the shooting death of a La Crosse man in November is now in custody.
Police said that Shavonte Thompson is identified as the suspect in the shooting of Javier Hall on November 2 off of Copeland Avenue. Their investigation determined that Thompson as the person who fired the gun that killed Hall.
The department said in a statement that Shavonte Thompson was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Peoria, Illinois on Friday.
In a statement from the department, the Marshal Service, along with the Peoria, Illinois Police Department were conducting surveillance on a residence because of information developed that Thompson was there. While conducting surveillance, they observed a subject they believed was Thompson enter the residence. As they attempted to make contact, Thompson tried to flee out of a window.
Thompson was ultimately taken into custody and has been taken to the Peoria County Jail where he is currently being held.
When the arrest warrant for Thompson was filed, a $1 million bond was attached to the warrant.
It wasn't immediately clear when Thompson would be extradited back from Peoria to La Crosse to face the homicide charge.
La Crosse Police had sent out a statewide alert for Thompson on Friday morning but canceled it following his arrest.
Thompson also had an arrest warrant for 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety/Possession of a Firearm by a Felon for an incident last summer.
Police said they continue to investigate the case. They said no new information is expected until next week.
