LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Let's face it. It's easy to get sick this time of year. You can give your immune system a hand, however, by keeping your hands away from your face.
Megan Meller, an infection control specialist at Gundersen Health System said people often don't realize it, but they tend to touch their face 20-30 times each hour. That's a problem because the mucus membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth are particularly receptive to germs and viruses that you might carry.
It will take an effort, Meller said, but the biggest thing we can do is be more conscious of when we're touching our faces. Of course, she also suggests washing hands as often as possible to reduce the infectious bodies we're carrying.
