MADISON (WKOW) -- Now that the holidays are over, some local tree farms are making sure their leftover evergreens are going to a good use.
Hann's Christmas Farm in Oregon donated extra trees to Henry Vilas Zoo Sunday morning.
Zoo officials say some of the animals like to play with the trees, nibble on them, or just enjoy the scents.
"It's actually really nice, too, because we know these trees have never been in homes, so we don't have to worry about any of the hooks, or tinsel, or anything else on them, and they're nice and fresh and the animals seem to really enjoy even the scent that comes off a fresh tree like this," said Beth Petersen, general curator at the zoo.
In the past, the extra trees were composted. When zoo officials learned about that they asked to take them, instead.
The trees will last up to a few weeks.
