MADISON, Wis. (WXOW) - Legislators took different views of Governor Tony Evers' 2020 State of the State address in Madison Wednesday evening.

Senate President Roger Roth delivered the Republican response to the speech. You can watch the video attached to this story. Mobile viewers can watch here.

Following the governor's speech, local legislators weighed in on the governor's remarks.

Rep. Jill Billings (D-La Crosse):

“Tonight the Governor continued to highlight the priorities of the people of Wisconsin. I heard him continue to lift up the issues he’s heard from people across the state, including water quality, rising health care costs, and the larger economic impact of student debt."

"I’m glad to be pursuing several of the initiatives he mentioned in his speech, authoring the insulin price cap bill, a public notification of water quality bill, and most recently legislation that provides funding for youth vaping cessation. Many of these bills have bi-partisan support and I’m eager to work together to address these issues in the coming months.”

Rep. Steve Doyle (D-Onalaska):

"A year ago today, Governor Evers’ offered his first State of the State address. His speech that night focused on the understanding that through bipartisanship we could accomplish so much for our great state. Tonight, he reaffirmed that understanding. This year’s State of the State speech heralded numerous accomplishments that were only possible because we chose to set aside our differences and work together.

In 2019 we passed bipartisan bills to improve the adoption system in our state, we passed bipartisan bills that take steps to reverse the suicide epidemic in our state, and we passed bipartisan bills that ensure we take care of the families of our law enforcement members who die in the line of duty. Our children, those who have suffered from a mental health crisis, and those who protect and serve our state deserve our very best. I could not be more proud to be a part of the bipartisan solutions we have created. I am consistently excited by Governor Evers' inclination to look for bipartisan solutions in the face of our current challenges, and I cannot wait to see what we accomplish next.

I look forward to working with Governor Evers and my Legislative colleagues to continue to move Wisconsin forward together."

Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse):

“It couldn’t be clearer that the public overwhelmingly supports Gov. Evers and Democratic solutions to propel our state forward. Democrats believe in prioritizing the people of Wisconsin and addressing the issues residents face every single day by lowering health care costs, strengthening clean water protections, and expanding economic security for families and seniors. Whether it’s accepting federal health dollars, closing the Dark Store Loophole, investing in local schools or legalizing medical marijuana, Wisconsin residents trust Democratic efforts to tackle the tough issues.

“I believe these goals are well within our reach, but time is of the essence. As legislators, we cannot ask the people of Wisconsin to settle for any less than they deserve. The longer Republicans refuse to do their job, the longer these challenges facing our communities will persist.

“My Democratic colleagues and I remain committed to working with Gov. Evers to advance bold solutions and ensure Wisconsin is a place where the next generation wants to live, work, and raise a family.”
