LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The name of the man who died Tuesday morning at the La Crosse County Jail is released by authorities.

Jeffrey D. Nottestad, 57, of Hixton was found unresponsive in his cell around 10:34 a.m.

While lifesaving efforts were attempted by jail staff and EMTs, he died.

The La Crosse County Sheriff's Office asked for an independent investigation from the La Crosse Police Department regarding Nottestad's death.

The La Crosse Police Department and La Crosse County Medical Examiner's Office aren't releasing any additional information on Nottestad's death until the investigation is complete.

Sheriff Jeff Wolf did say Tuesday that the man had previous medical issues.

An autopsy for Nottestad will be performed at a later time according to the Sheriff's Office.

Nottestad had been in the La Crosse County Jail since Friday, January 31, on a probation warrant issued by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
