Window shattered at Dickeyville Grotto, $5 and an apple left behind

DICKEYVILLE (WKOW) -- Someone shattered a window at Dickeyville Grotto's Main Shrine sometime between Sunday and Wednesday.

The Dickeyville Grotto and Shrines were built on Holy Ghost Parish grounds and are the works of the Rev. Matthias Wernerus, a Catholic priest and pastor of the parish from 1918 to 1931.

According to a Facebook post from police, "A large glass window inside the shrine was shattered and a person or persons climbed inside the fragile shrine leaving behind a large amount of broken glass and possible damage to the decorative stones, colored glass, gems and antique heirlooms."

In what police say could have been an act of contrition, an apple and $5 bill were left at the grotto shrine.

Authorities encouraged anyone with information related to the broken window to call (608) 568-7284.
