La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) - Already in 2020 La Crosse County has had 27 drug overdose deaths, which is more than double the number of drug deaths in 2019.

Alliance to Heal is sharing this new data on International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Alliance says abuse of illicit opioids such as heroin and illegally obtained fentanyl remain high. Sixteen of the confirmed overdoses this year are due to fentanyl, which has a legitimate use but is often abused.

Prescription opioids have shown up less often in toxicology reports but as it continues to fight overdose deaths, the Alliance says any La Crosse County resident receiving a prescription for a controlled substance, including opioids, will receive an information card to remind them about the importance of proper use and disposal.
