LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - La Crosse Police are looking for suspects in the theft of a part of one of the city's best-known, if somewhat controversial, artworks.

According to La Crosse Police, an officer returning to the department Sunday morning around 7:17 a.m. saw that the Blue Baby statue had been damaged and the face of the statue stolen.

The suspects removed the straps that secured the head to the bottom of the sculpture. They left the back of the head inside the egg.

A search of the area failed to turn up the face of the statue.

Later on Sunday, a local social media site displayed a picture of the face of the statue sitting on the floor of a residence propped up by a couch.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Monday morning, police were called to a home in the 1000 block of King Street. The caller said someone had left the face in his yard. The officer brought the portion of the statue back to the police department.

As of Monday afternoon, there aren't any suspects in the case. Police continue to investigate and look at surveillance video for the suspects.
