The Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Railroads issued a stop and flag order for a crossing on a busy highway in Monroe County.
The gates at the crossing on Highway 21 in Wyeville have been malfunctioning for months according to authorities. At times, they would come down without notice or not come down at all when trains passed. There were also incidents where the gates came down on vehicles going through the crossing.
A spokesperson for the Union Pacific Railroad said the gates were inspected and fixed on Friday. But on Monday afternoon, the gates came down again without a train on approaching on the tracks.
Union Pacific officials said the issues were due to a bad module caused by regular wear and tear.
The stop and flag order, which means trains must stop and workers must alert passing traffic, is expected to be lifted by the end of the week.
