River City Rhapsody brings top drum corps to La Crosse

The Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps competed against eight of the world’s top drum corps at the annual River City Rhapsody on Sunday.

Throughout the summer, The Blue Stars compete in the Drum Corps International Tour. Teams will perform in over 30 competitions to see who will be ranked top corps in the US.

Groups travel from as far as Texas to compete in the La Crosse competition, each with their own unique performance style on the field.

On Sunday, fans filled Roger Harring Stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus to appreciate the team effort it takes to be named best in the nation.

"It really is a very merit-based activity, in that it doesn’t matter what your income is, it doesn’t matter where you came from," Blue Stars Executive Director Brad Furlano explains.

"All that matters is that you’re willing to work hard and be apart of this and be a part of the team with everybody else. There’s no one person that is more important than anyone else, and it takes all of us together to achieve our goals and accomplish what we set out to do each year," Furlano adds.

The July 1 performance was the last Blue Stars performance in La Crosse for the season, with a performance scheduled next Sunday in Rochester, MN.
