Blood drive hopes to fill crucial need amid emergency appeal

After high demand during the July 4th holiday week, blood supplies are running extremely low, forcing the BloodCenter of Wisconsin to issue an emergency appeal.

Today, they hosted a blood drive at Gundersen Health Systems donation center.

Donations are at their lowest during summer because routine donors take summer vacations, and blood drives from colleges and high schools are put on hold while classes are out.

Doctors say as high as the need is right now, they still need more people year round.

"We’re in a period of shortage now, but the margin between what’s donated and what’s used is very narrow year round so as much as we really need people to step up to the plate now, it’s important year round because we’re in constant need of blood," explained Wayne Bottner, the Medical Director of Gundersen’s Blood Bank. "For the people who really need it, it’s life-saving. The most important use of blood is for people who are bleeding to death following a traumatic accident. Those patients would not survive if they didn’t get blood."

The next blood drive will be Friday, July 13th, at St. James Catholic Church in La Crosse from 10 am through 3 pm.
