Early morning crash in Town of Sterling after avoiding a deer

An early morning crash resulted in non-life-threatening injuries after the driver attempted to avoid a deer in the road.

In a statement released Tuesday, Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reported a crash in the Town of Sterling around 5:30 A.M. The driver was identified as Cory Lee Simonson, 39, of rural De Soto, Wis. Simonson was reportedly heading northbound on Fortner Road in his pickup truck when he swerved into the oncoming lane in order to miss hitting a deer. The vehicle then traveled back into the northbound lane and struck an embankment. The vehicle came to rest upright in a ditch. The Wheatland Fire Department removed Simonson removed from the vehicle.

Simonson received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse by Tri State Ambulance. He was treated and later released. Simonson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and there was no airbag deployment.
