LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – October 28, 1978.  That’s when the Freighthouse Restaurant opened its doors.

One of the original owners, John Rieder, was just 28 years old when he and others discovered the old Milwaukee Road freight office.  In 1978, it was used as a storage facility.  Turning it into a restaurant required a lot of work and a lot of money.

The risk was worth it.  Rieder sold the restaurant to its managers in 2009, and they’re running it the same way Rieder did.

You can learn more about how the restaurant began, how it survived a disaster and the secret to its success October 28 during the 10 PM report.
