La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) – Kids took over the Blessed Sacrament court Saturday morning, shooting hoops with a little extra passion.

It’s the 2nd annual Free Throw Championship sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Aquinas Catholic Schools.

A range of participants took part, with ages nine to 14 facing off from the free throw line, but it wasn’t just about winning or losing, the event instead teaches some important life lessons.

“One of the key things for the kids is in a competitive environment, be able to learn sportsmanship. You’re not gonna win everything, you’re gonna lose sometimes, right? We really want to strive for them to do their best and have a good experience and have those memories for a long time to come,” Organizer Nick Althoff said.

After a winner was crowned, organizers invited a motivational speaker to instill extra inspiration into the kids, teaching hard work ethics and a drive to always better themselves.

All participants were also given a free ticket to this weekend’s Midwest Classic high school basketball tournament at the La Crosse Center.
