More hours of daylight could affect your sleep schedule

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The summer solstice is Friday which means we get the most daylight of any day on the calendar.

Friday night, it won’t start getting dark outside until around 9. Health officials said this can be a problem if that’s past you or your kids’ bedtime.

Carly Overgard, a registered nurse at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, said when it starts getting dark outside, that’s when our bodies know it’s time to settle down and go to bed.

Overgard said light, like TV screens and our cellphones, keep our brain stimulated and keep us from falling asleep.

She stresses the importance of good sleep because it lowers our risk of stroke, heart attacks and helps regenerate tissues.

Overgard suggests sticking to a nightly schedule to help your body prepare to fall asleep at night.

“Summertime for kids it’s actually hard to keep a routine because it is nice outside. There’s ball games going on, they want to go outside and play,” Overgard said. “It is really important to try and keep somewhat of a schedule because it really helps for their growth.”

Overgard said if you’re having a hard time sleeping at night because of the longer daylight, you should try black-out curtains, stay off your cellphone and turn your TV off.

She said if you continually have issues sleeping you should try natural sleeping aids and talk with your doctor.
