Sheriff dismisses Miami tip in missing girl case

BARRON, Wis. (WQOW) – Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said reported sightings of missing teen Jayme Closs are not credible.

Fitzgerald said they followed up on that tip and 200 others in the past roughly 36 hours.

He said as the search for Closs continues, every minute counts. Night crews are coming in and the sheriff called it a “24/7 operation.” There are more than 100 people currently working the case. Secondary searches around the house have happened. Fitzgerald said they do not need the community to help search right now.

“Jayme is out there and we want to find her,” Fitzgerald said.

There are still a number of questions that remain unanswered.

Fitzgerald could not say whose phone the 911 call was made from, though authorities do now know. He also could not say if Jayme was at home at the time her parents were shot. When asked if Jayme has a boyfriend, the sheriff said he did not know.

An autopsy on Jayme’s parents, James and Denise is now planned for Wednesday.

During the press conference, Barron Superintendent Diane Tremblay thanked the public and law enforcement. She said the goal is to see Jayme again.

She told a story of an assignment Jayme did in school. The assignment was to tell what students would do with $1 million. Jayme’s response was she would feed the hungry and give the rest to the poor.

Tremblay said counselors are available for everyone and called the district a close-knit family.

If you have information on Jayme Closs’s whereabouts, you’re asked to call the Barron County Sheriff’s Department at 715-537-3106 immediately.
