LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – La Crosse Police said a lot of snow isn’t an excuse for people to park wherever they please. The same rules for parking still apply despite a snowy winter.

Snow can cover up parking space, along with snowbanks making it difficult to park in areas that would typically allow.

“If you are from the La Crosse area, you have to make yourself aware of the areas that you park, know your surroundings, make sure you are looking for crosswalks,” said Bradley Raasch, Civilian Service Employee, La Crosse Police.

It is Wisconsin law that vehicles should not be parked within 10 feet of a hydrant unless a greater distance is indicated by an official traffic sign. Regarding crosswalks, cars cannot be closer than 15 feet or near limits of a crosswalk.

Last year almost 50,000 parking citations were issued totaling to over $770,000 in fines.
