Calling out censorship for Banned Books Week

We’re looking ahead to a week to celebrate the books that push the envelope. Banned Books Week in La Crosse is set for September 23-29, but organizers are already stirring the pot.

On Tuesday, September 11, the latest “Storytime for Adults” at Turtle Stack Brewery will feature “forbidden texts.” The event runs from 6:30 to 8 on Tuesday evening at the 125 2nd St S La Crosse location.

Some highlights of the week itself include a theatrical piece and a social reading event. The UW-La Crosse Murphy Library invites everyone to the “Read Out” on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Pump House will host a reading of “The Metal Children” by Adam Rapp as part of the Alternative Truth Project on Tuesday.

Both the La Crosse Public Library and UW-La Crosse are celebrating banned books week with various events. It’s an annual awareness campaign that celebrates the freedom to read. “This isn’t a right or left issue. This is a freedom issue,” said Barry McKnight from the La Crosse Library.
