Spring into Art with Lanesboro community

Lanesboro, MN (WXOW) – The return to spring may warrant a scenic drive to Lanesboro, Minnesota. The next two weekends would be a good time to do so as the community is hosting its first Spring into Art Festival.

Local arts groups including the Commonweal Theatre Company are collaborating on a two-weekend transformation of Lanesboro into an “arts campus” as Hal Cropp puts it. The Commonweal Executive Director said the theatre itself will serve as the hub for the performance pieces with performances of its annual apprentice project “In a Word” by Lauren Yee and a two-person performance “Bakersfield Mist” starring Cropp and Adrienne Sweeney.

There are plenty of free events as well around the city both this weekend and next. Cropp said aspiring artists can try their hand at a variety of media during the art crawl and showcase the work at an exhibition. Live music and film screenings round out the weekend.

The ultimate showdown comes in the form of a “Canvas Clash” on Saturday, March 23 from 9-11 p.m. This event pits eight painters against one another on stage with just 20 minutes to create an original work. The field of competitors will be narrowed to four, then to two before a winner is crowned by the audience.

The Spring into Art Festival runs March 21-24 and March 28-31 in Lanesboro.
