(WXOW) – With the help of the Family & Children’s Center, we’re talking tough topics to call awareness to important issues. Monday saw part one of a two-part conversation centered on child abuse.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month. Because of that, local experts want to call to mind some of the facts and stigmas surrounding the problem.
On Daybreak, the center’s executive director, Tita Yutuc discussed how child abuse creates a cyclical problem. Though one person may be the target, the community feels the effect. Yutuc said abuse often causes an estimated 30% of victims to become abusers later in life.
When it comes to the financial toll taken, not only does abuse account for about $200,000 in costs for the victims themselves, Yutuc said it can cost up to $220 million in taxpayer dollars each day. She added that the best thing we can do is recognize the signs, and if we see something, say something.
The second part of this conversation will address some of those signs. Look for it first on Daybreak on Monday, April 22.
